Call for a Global Whale Sanctuary Now
In 1986, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned commercial whaling, yet even today several countries continue whaling. Why? Because under the 1946 IWC Convention, countries may officially object to any conservation measure adopted and therefore ignore it. Another provision allows countries to conduct so-called scientific whaling while actually killing whales for commercial gain.
Commercial whaling is so last century! There is no excuse for continuing to allow this barbaric and outdated practice, especially as other threats to whales such as pollution and climate change increase. It is time to declare a global whale sanctuary and make all the seas safe for whales. Join us in calling on world leaders to declare a global whale sanctuary so that all whales are protected from commercial hunting everywhere they feed, breed and migrate. No exceptions.
